California Love, a love story that took 28 years in the making seeks funding to complete

California Love is a movie based on a true love story from an idea birthed about 28 years ago. Joanne Beck, the woman behind this extraordinary love story, has launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to raise finishing funds to cover the cost of finishing production, post-production, and marketing of the movie. Her story was optioned three times by Hollywood directors and producers. However, she walked away from each of those deals because of their condition to change the authenticity. This story is really close to her heart and that is why she has decided to make this movie herself after years of rejection by big studios and production companies. Last year, Joanne was able to find an investor to begin pre-production and production of her film. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances during production, the financial constraints have caused her to start this campaign on Indiegogo.

“It’s important to me to honor this story by showing it in a true light. When my mentor Leon Watkins was dying last year, I made a promise to raise the money, and do the film myself. I have kept my promise, but need help getting to the end. I have come so far, and will not give up until the world can see this amazing film.” – Joanne Beck.

Joanne received the first offer to make this film by Zoetrope Films when her daughter was born 25 years ago. But again, the authenticity and true aspects of the characters were compromised, so she didn’t consider the offer. After 25 years,  she decided to make this film herself the way she envisioned it. Her screenplay, re-written by her daughter Danielle, peeked the interest of a well-known director and she finally got into the brink of turning her long-awaited dream into a reality.

Joanne sold everything including her home in Atlanta and packed up her car to come to LA for making this film. She was approached by some of the renowned faces of Hollywood for seeking a role in the film. They wanted to be a part of this movie as ‘these roles don’t come around so often’, they said. The film is a true story of unity, strength, and power that comes from the love that can grow when people lay down their biases, egos, and fears to see each other not as the other, but as part of ourselves. The film comes with a message that needs to be told more than ever right now.
